Healthcare in Mexico: what to check before a visit or a move
Coverage, payment and emergency planning deserve their own place on your Mexico checklist.

Will my existing insurance cover me?
Ask your insurer directly whether your plan covers treatment in Mexico, which facilities you can use and whether medical evacuation is included. The U.S. State Department advises travelers to review overseas coverage and consider evacuation insurance. A domestic insurance card is not proof of international coverage.
How are bills handled?
Facilities, policies and patient circumstances differ. Confirm billing and authorization arrangements with both the provider and the insurer. Do not assume a clinic will bill a foreign insurer directly or that a particular public system will cover you. For a move, investigate enrollment and coverage based on your own status and needs before a health problem arises.
What should I keep ready?
Keep your policy details, assistance contact, medication names and relevant medical information accessible. Discuss ongoing prescriptions with a qualified clinician before moving. In an emergency, dial 911 for an ambulance, as the UK government’s Mexico health guidance advises. This article is planning information, not medical advice or a promise of care at a specific facility.
